My hometown is a remote, lonely village, with verdant mountains and clean streams, full of fresh air… The sur-roundings is quiet and graceful. What a wonderful sight!But Im sorry to say its so poor, so backward. One day in a late autumn, my parents and I went back there together, in order to call on my grandfather being ill. Getting off the bus, slowly we walked hard towards my hometown along a narrow winding path. Suddenly, the hap-py laughter of children interested me. I looked around, and caught sight of some children playing, aged 8-9. It seemed they were free from care. I went up to them, and

asked, " Why arent you at school now? Are you on leave?" One boy stood up and said sadly, " We dont have any teachers, No teachers teach us. Two years ago, we had a teacher from a city. But only two weeks later he went away. From then on, no teacher comes here any more. Also we have no school to attend here."

"Why dont you go to the city to study?" I asked. "My parents are both farmers, we havent enough money." He stopped for a moment, and then continued, "We really hope for school." After hearing that, I couldnt say a word with a heavy heart.

Later, I thought it over for a long time. Thats the childrens fault? No. Thats their parents fault with no money? No. But I don’t really understand why.

If they could be at school like me. How wonderful it is. However, in fact they couldn’t be. What can I do for them?

Facing the children unable to go to school;

Facing the poverty of minority nationality regions;

Facing all these facts， suddenly, a bright idea struck me. From that moment, I have a dream, a splendid dream!

Also, I dream, one day, the students I teach will graduate from universities and take heavy responsibilities of building our hometown, building our motherland.

I dream, one day, all these will come true. And my hometown will become richer and richer, more and more beautiful.

Thats my dream. Iu return to my mother school with my faith. Having this belief, Iu value the time, every hour, every minute,every second. Ill study each lesson well, and lay the foundation,in order to realize the hope of childrens attending school, seeking for knowledge.

Having this belief, Iu break up a new path to achieve the goal.

时光匆匆，转眼间我已走过了四年的从教生涯。虽然在大家看来这段时间有些短暂。但细数往昔岁月的点点滴滴，我还是要长叹：生活原来给了我们那么多感动。为了这真情付出后得到的感动，我一直在追求着。刚刚参加工作时，信心百倍。记得第一次以教师的身份走进课堂，感觉一切都是那样美好。然而，醉酒方知酒味浓，为师才知为师难。一段时间之后，我先前良好的自我感觉早就一扫而空，面对一群求知欲渴的孩子们，我才真正意识到教师职业是何等的艰辛和琐碎，三尺讲台站上去容易，要站好可真难啊！

每个人都希望自己的人生风和日丽，莺歌燕舞。但月有阴晴圆缺，人有旦夕祸福，挫折和失败总是不断地踩痛我们的心。我们是把失意的怨气撒在孩子身上，还是收起此时内心的苦楚用微笑面对纯真可爱的孩子？我想没有人愿意选择前者，因为你的心中有爱！鲁迅先生有句话“教育是植根与爱的”。是的，爱是教育的源泉，教师有了爱，才会用伯乐的眼光去发现孩子们的闪光点，才会对自己的教育对象充满了信心和爱心，才会有追求卓越的精神和创新的精神。

The three tasks may be different indifferent versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the princeclaiming the princess's hand triumphantly.

And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they livehappily every after."

Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I wouldsay, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations ofrepetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highlyphilosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition ofsuccess: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 )challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process ofsurmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through;and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.

The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, butalso emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward ofsuccess will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous,and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easylife, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are nodifficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to besure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the truemeaning of success entails a combination of both the process and thesatisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give anotheranalogy.

If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sentaway David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely DavidBeckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill ofaccomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules bynot allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lifta finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, becausethe meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, insurmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires itsvalue. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree ofdifficulties on overcomes.

The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature ofdifficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a greatdifficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same asyou can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire StephenHawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatlyto the field of science.

I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stagefright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest likethis. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering theuniversity level contest.But I chose to accept the challenge and to face thedifficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success forme. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last,I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a truesuccess, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do moreassertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful stepforward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in mylife, because I have truly gained by participating.

Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition ofsuccess. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, positionand fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized theprocess of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined themeaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

I often wonder what friendship is. Friendship is too big a topic to talk about either specifically or generally. I guemost of us are still in a puzzling state about what friendship is, and I myself should be included. Maybe people who define friendship according to his own life experience will say that they have a good concept of friendship, which I think is too narrow to get an objective definition of it. But how hard it would be to talk about friendship without mixing personal feeling in it, especially when it comes to the matter of CLOSEST friend. So here I would like to share my views with you about friendship, about my closest friend. I have had friends since I was born, some of whom have come along with me through my life, and it is impossible to always keep your friends around you since departure is one part of life that everybody must experience. Though some of you may oppose me by exaggerating the connotation of the concept of being together that is friends may not stay together physically but they can stay together always psychologically.

I still hold that departure is an absolute thing. How could it be possible that your friend (even your closest friend) always keeps you in heart as he/she had, is having and will have different experiences from yours? Somehow different experiences make up of different hearts. Man’s heart is a quite strange thing. Never think that one can wholly touch it. Sometimes our heart is so abstract that you don’t even know how to get to them. If we take heart as a cube, and closest friend a gentle breeze, this breeze can only blow one facet of this cube from one direction and can rarely reach any other sides of your heart. I’m not sure whether I have put it very clearly but believe me that there are no fixed closest friend in your life. With different time, place, space, emotion and situation, you have different closest friends. When I play basketball, I have a closest friend who knows how to cooperate with me and together give our opponents a deadly attack; when I am alone and feel so lonely, I have a friend who can always comfort me by saying that he is my friend; when I am in need of money, the one who comes all the way and lend his money to me without any hesitation is my closest friend;

when I am proud and a friend dares to stand out to warn me that I should keep modest, he is my closest friend; and, when I read Old Man and the Sea, I think Hemingway is my best friend. You see then, how many closest friends I have. But I must say, though I always want to keep all of them in my heart, they are not actually always in my heart. They have their own friends and their own life. Winston Churchill once said that there’s no perpetual friend, nor perpetual enemy, only perpetual interest. More and more examples from our everyday life show how much a simple smile can change everything.

Forever engraved in my mind will be the smiling faces of the people of Thailand, the friendly pizza delivery boy, the welcoming supermarket vendor, the nice cashier at the bank, … etc.

It is these smiles that keep me wanting to go back, and that keep us all wanting to go back; looking at it from another view, if we break it down using business sense, a smile is one of the most effective means to generate sales and develop customer loyalty.

On top of all that, a smile is a very simple and easy thing to do, so it amazes why no one bothers to do it, it not only makes the person in front of you better, but it also makes you feel better as well, and I’m not making this up,it has been psychologically proven.

Personally, I’d like to see more smiling faces in this world; in the airports when I enter a new country, in companies, government agencies, restaurants, hotels, banks,everywhere; and I think it is up to governments to campaign about this, and even make it obligatory in certain important places like airports, hospitals,hotels … etc.
